The Basics

The Melrose Family Room was established in October 1988 as a gathering place for families of infants and young children through age six. The room provides the space for families to play, talk, and get to know other families from Melrose and the surrounding communities.

We organize many special events, including seasonal parties, outings for the entire family and special programs for children. We also send members monthly newsletters with parenting tips, community, and events info.

Our Location & Hours

The Family Room is located at the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St. We are not church-affiliated, but we rent space from the church at a reasonable rate. Our space is accessed through the front west entrance of the building. The room is open to members seven (7) days a week from 8am to 8pm, with occasional exceptions for church events and member private events.

Note: The MFR is not handicap-accessible. It is on the first floor but there are several steps to enter the building. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

How We Function

We are a not-for-profit parent-run cooperative. Our volunteer board oversees the operations and maintenance of the room, runs our annual membership drive, and organizes events and fundraisers for our member community. Additionally, support and involvement by all member families is essential to the Melrose Family Room's success.

Our Members

All of our members contribute to the upkeep and running of the Melrose Family Room, whether they are volunteering to lead a story time, helping organize an event for member families, participating in one of our room and toy-cleaning sessions, or simply fixing a toy or changing lightbulbs. Our handbook provides in-depth information about what membership in this organization means and entails.
